Northern Tanzania
Ilkiding'a
In Ilkiding'a, you can visit a Maasai boma, learn about the old African irrigation system, experience Waarusha culture, and enjoy traditional food. You may also visit a traditional healer and meet local craftspeople who make wooden stools, jewellery, knives, and traditional clothing.
Ilkurot
Ilkurot is located about 20 km west of Arusha, along the Nairobi road. A visit can include trekking on Ngorora Hill, a Maasai boma visit, Maasai cultural activities, traditional dancing, and a visit to a colourful local market.
Longido
Longido is near the Kenyan border at Namanga. Cultural experiences here can include camel riding, learning about Maasai life, bird watching, and wildlife viewing in the surrounding area.
Sapuk
A cultural tour in Sapuk can include a waterfall visit, forest catchment area, and views over the city of Arusha. Longer visits give more time to walk, learn, and enjoy the area.
Engaruka
Engaruka is located about 63 km north of Mto wa Mbu, on the road toward Oldonyo Lengai and Lake Natron. It is one of Tanzania's important historical sites.
Around 500 years ago, a farming community lived here and developed an advanced irrigation and cultivation system. Many questions remain about who lived in Engaruka, how the system was developed, and why the community eventually left around 1700.
Hadzabe / Lake Eyasi
Near Lake Eyasi, travellers can visit the Hadzabe community, sometimes referred to historically as Bushmen. The Hadzabe are known for their traditional hunting and gathering lifestyle.
A visit may include learning about daily life, walking in the surrounding area, and understanding how the community has lived close to nature for generations. Tours in this area can be arranged over 2 or 3 nights, with campsites available for accommodation.
Mto wa Mbu
Mto wa Mbu is located near Lake Manyara National Park. It is one of Tanzania's most culturally diverse areas, with communities from different language and cultural groups living close together.
A tour can include a Maasai boma visit, traditional dancing, local markets, schools, community projects, and a walk or hike near the Rift Valley wall with views toward Lake Manyara.
Monduli Juu
Monduli Juu is located about 50 km northwest of Arusha, on the road toward Serengeti National Park, Lake Manyara, and Ngorongoro Conservation Area.
Experiences can include walking and trekking in the Monduli Mountains, visiting Maasai women involved in jewellery and handcrafts, climbing the Kona Saba escarpment, learning about medicinal herbs, walking in evergreen forest, and enjoying views over the Rift Valley, Oldonyo Lengai, and Lake Natron.
North Pare Mountains
The North Pare Mountains offer forest and moorland tours, with half-day, full-day, and multi-day options available.
Highlights may include clan forests, moorlands, historic ceremonial sites, traditional irrigation systems, healers, pottery, local history, and views toward Mount Kilimanjaro, the plains, South Pare Mountains, Usambara Mountains, and Mkomazi Game Reserve.
Marangu / Mamba
In the Marangu and Mamba area, travellers interested in Kilimanjaro history can visit the home and memorial of Yohano Lauwo, a local guide connected with Dr. Hans Meyer's 1889 Kilimanjaro expedition.
You can also learn about Chagga culture by visiting a traditional Chagga house, the Chief Mangi area, historical schools and court sites, and caves once used during conflicts between the Chagga and Maasai.
Kisangara
Kisangara is located about 62 km southeast of Moshi, near Mount Kilimanjaro.
Experiences can include visits to local economic and cultural projects such as carpentry, brick-making, sisal plantations, local beer brewing, Lembeni Herbal Hospital, forest hikes in the Kindoroko Mountains, spice garden tours, and fishing or boating on Nyumba ya Mungu Lake.
Moderate walking may be required. Comfortable walking shoes, sun cream, and a hat are recommended. Accommodation options may include cottages, campsites, or day trips from Moshi and Same.
South Pare Mountains
South Pare cultural tours can range from half-day visits to 3-day experiences.
Highlights may include caves used during the slave-raiding period, viewpoints toward Mount Kilimanjaro, the Usambara Mountains, Maasai Steppe, Mkomazi Game Reserve, and Taita Hills, as well as forests, moorlands, German-era buildings, traditional healers, craftspeople, farmers, and women's groups.
Some areas require brisk walking and steep climbs. Meals, snacks, water, homestays, lodge stays, or camping may be arranged depending on the itinerary.
Eastern Tanzania and Coast
Saadani Village
Saadani Village, located within Saadani National Park, offers cultural tourism experiences connected to the history of the area. Visitors may learn about local life and, depending on the itinerary, taste fresh seafood from the Indian Ocean.
West Usambara
The West Usambara Mountains are located in northeastern Tanzania, between Mount Kilimanjaro and the Indian Ocean.
Visits can include viewpoints from the mountain edge, walks through natural forests, rivers, development projects, traditional pottery villages, and butterfly viewing.
Gezaulole
Gezaulole is located on the coast, south of Dar es Salaam, about half an hour from the Kigamboni ferry area.
Visitors can experience village life, quiet beaches, bird watching, and local handcrafts.
Pangani
Pangani is located about 50 km south of Tanga on Tanzania's Indian Ocean coast.
A Pangani town tour can include historical buildings, former slave labour and market sites, coconut plantations, and fishing with local fishermen.
