Amazing Waterfalls Excursions
Waterfall Day Trips in Arusha and Kilimanjaro
If you would like to visit waterfalls while staying in Arusha, Moshi, or near Mount Kilimanjaro, Mima Adventures Africa can arrange a guided day trip to one of the area's beautiful waterfall locations.
These excursions are a good way to slow down between safari days, enjoy a gentle hike, learn from local communities, and see the greener side of northern Tanzania.
Marangu Village Tour and Waterfalls
Marangu is a large village on the lower slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro. It has a cool climate, a lively local feel, and easy access to walking routes, caves, coffee farms, banana plantations, and waterfalls.
Drive time depends on your starting point. From Moshi or Marangu it is shorter; from Arusha, allow a longer transfer.
This visit can also include time learning about Chagga culture. Depending on the programme and availability, you may visit a traditional Chagga house, learn about banana and coffee growing, see local blacksmith work, visit nearby caves, taste local food, or try Mbege, a traditional local brew made with banana and millet.
At the waterfall, you can relax, enjoy lunch, and swim if conditions are suitable. The water can be very cold, so bring swimwear if you would like to try.
Possible Activities in Marangu
- Walk through coffee and banana farms
- Visit Marangu Waterfalls
- Swim at the waterfall if conditions are safe
- Learn about Chagga culture and daily life
- Learn how local coffee is grown, prepared, roasted, and brewed
- Taste your own freshly prepared coffee
- Learn about local plants and flowers on the Kilimanjaro slopes
- Visit nearby caves or village sites, depending on the itinerary
- Enjoy views of Mount Kilimanjaro when the weather is clear
Materuni Village Tour and Waterfalls
Materuni Waterfalls are located near Materuni Village, close to Moshi on the slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro.
Transport can be arranged by private car for a more comfortable and direct journey. Local transport may be possible on request, but private car transfer is the most comfortable option.
On arrival, you begin with a coffee tour at a traditional Chagga shamba. Your guide explains the homestead, the crops grown in the area, and the steps involved in making coffee, from picking and preparing the beans to roasting, grinding, and drinking a fresh cup.
After the coffee tour, continue on a short hike through the village and green slopes toward the waterfall. The trail can be muddy, so comfortable walking shoes or light hiking boots are recommended.
Lunch may be a picnic lunch box or a freshly cooked local meal prepared by a family in the village, depending on the arrangement. After lunch, you can swim in the pool below the waterfall if conditions allow. The water is refreshing and usually quite cold.
When you are ready, walk back to the vehicle or local transport point for the return journey to Moshi or Arusha.
