A practical Kilimanjaro hut route
The Marangu Route, often called the Coca-Cola Route, is one of Kilimanjaro's best-known trekking routes and the only main route with permanent mountain huts.
This 5-day Marangu itinerary is a direct route and is better suited to trekkers with previous high-altitude or long-distance trekking experience. For first-time Kilimanjaro climbers, the 6-day Marangu option is usually a better choice because the extra day gives your body more time to acclimatise.

Your 5-day Marangu itinerary
Rainforest to Mandara Hut
After breakfast, drive to Marangu Gate for registration, then begin through dense rainforest toward Mandara Hut. If time and conditions allow, your guide may lead a short walk to Maundi Crater.
Heath and Moorland
Leave Mandara Hut and continue beyond the timberline into heath and moorland. Horombo Hut sits at about 3,700 m, with views toward Mawenzi, Kibo, and the Maasai Steppe in clear weather.
Across the Saddle
Pass the Last Water Point and continue across the dry alpine Saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo. Arrive at Kibo Hut for an early meal and rest before the summit attempt.
Summit Attempt
Begin around midnight and climb slowly toward Gillman's Point. Climbers who are strong enough and well acclimatised continue toward Uhuru Peak before descending to Kibo Hut and then Horombo Hut.
Final Descent
Descend through heath, moorland, and rainforest to Marangu Gate. After saying goodbye to the mountain team, transfer back to Moshi for a shower and rest.
